“Despite the many rave reviews the 30,000-square-foot building received when it opened in December 2001, it was immediately clear to many that the building was not only ugly and confining, it was also all but useless for showing art.”
—Jerry Saltz
While it is not the responsibility of the architects that the museum has failed (and Williams and Tsien normally produce extremely thoughtful work), architects must once again become partners in determining the appropriate cost and the appropriate program for our clients, and understand how their businesses will work.
This was once the case, but specialization has led to detachment over the past 40-50 years, and they should no longer simply be stylists for hire, but team members once again.
